Tutte Centenary Retreat

Program Description: 2017 is the centenary year of the birth of W. T. (Bill) Tutte, one of the founders of modern graph theory. The Retreat will focus on three topics that have grown out of seminal contributions he made at the very start of his career: Tutte-Whitney polynomials, matroid structure theory, and symmetric graphs. The first of these is central to the enumerative theory of graphs and matroids; the second builds on the recent Geelen-Gerards-Whittle extension to matroids of the celebrated Robertson-Seymour Graph Minor theory; and the third considers graphs that are both aesthetically pleasing and have some desirable practical properties, including strength, stability and broadcast efficiency, yet can be very difficult to construct and classify. The Retreat emphasises collaborative research, supported by problem sessions and only a few talks. We expect to make signifi cant progress in all three areas, and to involve PhD students and postdoctoral researchers as well as
international leaders in these fields.
