Dynamics, Foliations, and Geometry in Dimension 3

David Wood

  •  3 Sep 2018 - 14 Sep 2018
     8:00 am - 5:00 pm

Organisers: Jonathan Bowden (Ludwig-Maximillians-Universität, Germany/Monash University), Steven Frankel (Yale, USA), Andy Hammerlindl (Monash University), Rafael Potrie (Universidad de la República, Uruguay).

Program Description: A fundamental goal of this program is to improve our understanding of the forms of chaotic dynamics which arise in dimension 3. In this setting, the geometry and topology of a 3-dimensional manifold are critical to understanding the dynamics which acts upon it. The properties of invariant foliations and contact structures on the manifold give further information on the possible dynamics. Conversely, results in dynamics may also be applied to further the study of geometry, topology, and foliation theory.
This program will therefore bring together experts in dynamics, foliation theory, and the geometry and topology of 3-manifolds to produce new research involving all of these fields and to build new collaborations among these groups.

Program Details and Materials:

4 mini-courses will be given as below:
1) Partially Hyperbolic Systems: Rafael Potrie and Andy Hammerlindl
2) Quasi-Geodesic and Pseudo-Anosov flows : Steven Frankel
3) Foliations on 3-manifolds: Danny Calegari
