Program Description:
Despite the significant progress in our understanding of heterogeneity made possible by mathematical and experimental advances, many challenges limit the translation of these scientific advances into healthcare innovation and solutions. These challenges call for innovative quantitative approaches to better understand, predict, and control cellular heterogeneity. This general goal can be exemplified in the following specific challenges that are current active areas of research:
- What is the most suitable approach to capture cellular heterogeneity? When is it necessary to capture cell-level dynamics through, e.g., an agent-based model, and when is a continuum framework capturing parameter variability sufficient?
- How can models incorporate heterogeneity across spatial scales: from within-cell gene expression to inter-population variability?
- How can mathematical theory account for changes in system dynamics over the disparate time-scales that shape heterogeneity?
- How can models incorporate the diverse sources of experimental data available: from population-level measurements of dynamical behaviour, to gene expression, transcriptomic, and single-cell data? Is there a unifying framework to incorporate seemingly disparate sources of information?
The first week of this workshop will primarily comprise talks by key speakers and activities, such as targeted group discussions and flashtalks by participants, that will lay the foundation for smaller groups to identify and tackle problems associated with the challenges outlined above.
