MATRIX warmly congratulates Professor Terry Tao AC FAA FRS on his appointment as a Companion of the Order of Australia (AC) in the 2026 King’s Birthday Honours.

The Companion of the Order of Australia is the nation’s highest civilian honour and recognises Professor Tao’s eminent service to the mathematical sciences, the global mathematics community, and tertiary education and academia.

Born in Adelaide and now based at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), Terry is widely regarded as one of the world’s leading mathematicians. His remarkable contributions across fields including harmonic analysis, partial differential equations, additive combinatorics and number theory have had a profound impact on modern mathematics. In 2006, he became the first Australian to receive the Fields Medal, the highest international honour in mathematics.

Terry has made significant contributions to MATRIX through his service on the MATRIX Scientific Committee and as an editor of the MATRIX Annals. Through these roles, he has helped shape the institute’s scientific direction and contributed to the dissemination of high-quality mathematical research arising from MATRIX activities.
