This year marks the 10-year anniversary of MATRIX, Australia’s residential institute for the mathematical sciences. Established in 2015, MATRIX is supported by a national institutional collaboration that includes the University of Melbourne, Monash University, the University of Queensland, the Australian National University, the University of New South Wales. MATRIX has become a national hub for deep, collaborative research across the mathematical sciences.
Over the past decade, MATRIX has hosted 106 research programs, drawing over 2573 researchers from Australia and around the globe. Located in the serene surrounds of the historic Creswick campus, MATRIX provides a unique environment for mathematicians to work intensively on frontier problems in areas ranging from pure mathematics and statistics to mathematical physics, data science, and applications in biology, finance, and engineering.
“The vision for MATRIX was to create a place where ideas could flourish through sustained, in-person collaboration,” said Professor Jan de Gier, founding Director of MATRIX. “Ten years on, that vision has been realised beyond our expectations. MATRIX is now internationally recognised as a centre for mathematical excellence.”
MATRIX programs have led to significant scientific advances, high-impact publications, and new international research partnerships. The institute has played a key role in strengthening Australia’s mathematical ecosystem and building bridges between academia, government, and industry.
MATRIX thanks its partner institutions, program organisers, participants, and supporters for a decade of shared vision and intellectual leadership. As it enters its second decade, MATRIX remains committed to fostering world-class mathematical research in Australia.
