Program Description:
Representation theory lies at the heart of much of modern mathematical physics. Conversely, mathematical physics provides representation theory with a plethora of interesting concrete examples, including in particular non-semisimple ones. Here, we mention three structures:
- Lie superalgebras, which arise in models that include fermions;
- Quantum groups, which underlie integrable quantum symmetry; and
- Vertex operator algebras, which are the symmetry algebras of conformal field theories.
All three fields have been rapidly developed over the last forty years and have led to a rich cross-fertilisation of ideas between physicists and mathematicians. In particular, these ideas have immeasurably advanced many mathematical disciplines including tensor categories, knot theory, operator algebras and subfactors, topological quantum field theory and number theory.

MATRIX Wine and Cheese Afternoon 11 June 2027
On the first Tuesday of each program, MATRIX provides a pre-dinner wine and cheese afternoon. Produce is locally-sourced to showcase delicacies from the region.
