Program Description:
Viscoplastic flows exhibit a yield stress, which is a critical value of the internal stress below which they are rigid and above which they flow. Viscoplastic flows arise in industry (e.g. food science and construction materials), geology (lava and mud flows), and biology (locomotion in mucus and soil). Over the past 20 years, there has been an explosion in the use of mathematical models and analysis to explore the dynamics of such flows. Motivated by computational and experimental results, this mathematical work has provided many new insights to the physics of these fascinating flows.
This research program will bring together Australian and international experts from a broad range of backgrounds to collaborate on these applied mathematical problems and identify future research opportunities. Whilst there are many researchers across Australia and New Zealand with expertise and interest in this field, they are rarely brought together. The program provides an opportunity to highlight the work being done in our region to the invited international experts. It will also expose the domestic graduate students to a geographically broader community of viscoplastic researchers, an experience that is enjoyed by their peers in Europe and North America but is less common in Australia.
