MATRIX International Family Fund Guidelines

The MATRIX International Family Fund is designed to lower the barrier for participation in mathematics research by mathematicians with carer responsibilities.

Funding will be allocated on a case-by-case basis according to need. The Fund may cover additional costs for family-friendly housing up to 14 nights and up to AUD2,000. The Fund may also contribute to additional return economy airfares and reasonable child care costs, in total up to AUD4,000 per family.

Australian-based researchers may access the MATRIX Family Fund that allows researchers with caring responsibilities to attend MATRIX research programs by providing additional housing and support for children as well as a partner or carer.

Feedback from participants having made use of the MATRIX Family Fund has been overwhelmingly positive. Several carers have been able to participate in MATRIX research programs because of the scheme.

Eligibility

Applications are limited to MATRIX research programs in 2026 or 2027 that include program organisers from one or more MATRIX Partners or Associate Members.

Eligible applicants must be an invited participant to a MATRIX research program and a researcher (all levels) employed at a non-Australian academic institution.

Applicants must hold a PhD degree, or equivalent, in the mathematical sciences or related disciplines, and have an excellent research track record relative to opportunity.

Please contact the relevant program organisers if you are interested in participating but have not been invited.

Application process

Applicants should submit an argued case (not more than half a page) and C.V. to the MATRIX Office. Please include the research program you will be attending.

MATRIX International Family funding will be awarded based on excellence of the applicant’s track record and on alignment with the intended MATRIX Research Program. The argued case needs to make a compelling case for the need to access the Fund, the significance of participation of the applicant, and how this will enhance their research. International awardees are encouraged to visit other research institutions in Australia before or after attending a MATRIX Research Program.
