Celebrating 10 Years of MATRIX: Thank You for Your Good Wishes

2025 marks a decade of MATRIX as Australia’s residential research institute in the mathematical sciences — a place where researchers from around the world come together to think deeply, exchange ideas, and build lasting connections. From its modest beginnings, MATRIX has grown steadily into an international hub, thanks to the collective dedication and support of its vibrant community. On this milestone, we received many warm wishes and deeply personal messages, which are a cherished part of our 10th anniversary celebrations. We are delighted to share a selection of them with you.

“Congratulations on providing a lovely environment for research and collaboration, MATRIX. MATRIX provided an environment for me to reconnect with other researchers, and create new collaborations.”

“I had a wonderful time in Creswick at the extremal combinatorics workshop in December 2023. Everybody was so friendly, the setting was beautiful, and we proved some nice theorems as well. It was one of the highlights of my sabbatical in Australia and I hope that the next 10 years of MATRRIX will be as inspiring as the first 10 years.”

“Having participated at residential research institutes in several countries, I prefer the ones we have at MATRIX Institute. What makes MATRIX Institute so valuable for researchers is that there is no pressure to stack many speakers/talks onto a program to demonstrate impact. Indeed, quite the opposite is true, organizers are encouraged to maximize collaboration time, even if it means fewer talks. As a result, we have the space to discuss and advance new ideas, rather than sitting in a theatre for hours on end. MATRIX is disproportionately impactful, a precious jewel in Australian mathematics, and one I hope will be around for future generations of mathematicians as well.”

“Thank you for the update and the inspiring video celebrating this occasion. It's wonderful to be part of the MATRIX community. I find the way MATRIX operates to be truly motivating and inspiring, fostering collaboration and the exchange of ideas in mathematical sciences research. Congratulations to you and the entire team on reaching this significant 10-year milestone! I wish MATRIX all the very best for many more successful years to come as a leading research institute.”

“I have participated in MATRIX programs from its very inception, and still remember the excitement of organising a program in its very first year, in our own Australian research centre! So grateful to Jan de Gier and others who made this happen. MATRIX is crucial for mathematics in Australia, it keeps us connected to the groundbreaking international and local research. Throughout these 10 years the MATRIX team has been exceptionally helpful, accommodating and generous, going out of their way to help mathematicians organise the most productive and high-quality programs possible. To keep this genuine spirit (as well as the funding) going for a whole decade is a massive achievement! I trust that the next 100 years of MATRIX will be as successful as the first 10!”

“Congratulations for this fantastic place, excellent organisation and great warmth of all the staff. I wish you many more years of successful events.”

“I travelled half around the world to get to Melbourne and then MATRIX. It was well worth it: had a wonderful time, learned much mathematics, saw much beautiful nature, met friendly humans and saw friendly-looking marsupials, but did not check how friendly they may really have been.”

“The MATRIX Institute, like the Saint Seiya guarding the Southern Cross constellation, guides mathematics in the region—and even across the globe—toward uncharted realms.”

“MATRIX is a wonderful addition to the Australian mathematical research landscape. It is similar to other research institutes such as MFO, Banff, Luminy etc in being residential, so that participants meet over meals and can meet for discussion during meals, or after dinner, etc. But it differs from most other mathematical research institutes in having relatively few formal lectures (typically two per day) and plenty of open-ended collaboration/discussion time. I have found this to be an ideal format, with the formal lectures often providing an initial topic of discussion, and the subsequent conversations can be extraordinarily valuable and productive. Ideal for starting new research collaborations. Whoever designed MATRIX had perfect judgement about what mathematicians need in a research institute!”

“A really great venue and great people to learn about the mathematics and its applications in various fields. A enjoyed my stay during April 2024 where I enriched my knowledge through discussions with eminent professors across the globe. Thank you, MATRIX Team for wonderful opportunity and hospitality.”

“The rough paths session at MATRIX at the end of 2023 was the highlight of my PhD -- far and away the happiest and most productive time.”

“One of the things I appreciated most about MATRIX was its unique working group format, which prioritized genuine collaboration over the usual stream of talks typical of traditional conferences. This structure created the space for focused discussions, concrete progress, and new ideas to emerge organically, often among participants who had never worked together before. The programs I participated in were thoughtfully designed to bring together researchers with aligned interests but differing motivations, backgrounds, and mathematical languages. This diversity of perspective sparked new insights and fostered collaborations that might never have occurred in a more conventional setting. Institutes like MATRIX, which offer retreat-style environments for smaller groups to work intensively together, are incredibly valuable to the mathematical community. They provide a rare opportunity for deep, uninterrupted engagement with complex problems. MATRIX has clearly established itself as a vital hub for serious, collaborative mathematical research. I hope it continues to flourish and support future generations of mathematicians.”

“I truly appreciate the wonderful environment at MATRIX that made my stays both productive and enjoyable. The inspiring natural surroundings and excellent food created the perfect atmosphere to focus, share ideas, and connect with colleagues. MATRIX is a unique and special place where researchers can come together and make meaningful progress. I look forward to returning again soon and continuing to be part of this vibrant community.”

“It is a long journey from Australia to the other continents, so the opportunity to meet international researchers at MATRIX programmes has been invaluable to me and many other scientists based in Australia. I am currently progressing with collaborations that would not exist without MATRIX programmes. MATRIX is a fantastic resource, and I wish them the very best as they continue their excellent and important work. I enjoyed my stays very much.”
