MATRIX-Simons Travel Grant Scheme Guidelines

MATRIX provides partial travel support in the form of grants of up to 75% of travel costs, capped at AUD 2,500. Preference may be given to participants from developing countries especially in the Asia-Pacific region and to applicants from diverse backgrounds.

Eligibility

Applications are limited to applicants who will participate in a MATRIX research program that includes program organisers from one or more MATRIX full partners.

Eligible applicants must be an invited participant to a MATRIX research program in 2024/2025 and either:

• an early career researcher employed at an Australian-based research institution, within 10 years of PhD award at the time of application submission, where periods of career interruption (for carer responsibilities or relocation) will be considered; or
• a researcher (all levels) employed at a non-Australian-based academic institution.

Applicants must hold a PhD degree, or equivalent, in the mathematical sciences or related disciplines, and have an excellent research track record relative to opportunity.

Please contact the relevant program organisers if you are interested in participating but have not been invited.

Application process

Applicants should submit an argued case (not more than half a page) and an up-to-date C.V. to the MATRIX Office (email: office@matrix-inst.org.au). Please include the research program you will be attending.

MATRIX-Simons Travel Grants will be awarded based on excellence of the applicant’s track record and on alignment with the intended MATRIX Research Program. The argued case needs to make a compelling case for the significance of participation of the applicant, and how this will enhance their research. International awardees are encouraged to visit other research institutions in Australia before or after attending a MATRIX Research Program.

Application submission deadlines: Applications for Travel Grants close for each Research Program six months prior to commencement.

Alternate travel arrangements

If unforeseen circumstances prevent an awardee from attending the intended MATRIX Research Program, the MATRIX Director may approve use of the grant for attendance at an alternate MATRIX Research Program of equivalent status and relevance.

The MATRIX Office must be advised by email if the applicant/awardee intends to revise travel arrangements.
